Objective

Membership is open to all NOGALSS Members and Associates (people who believe in the Vision of NOGALSS) through registration via the membership application form. We have NOGALSS cooperative bylaw, operational guidelines, membership passbooks and other necessary documents. Our structure is spread across Nigeria.

The main essence for this Cooperative Society is therefore to:
  • Build a sustainable financial base through the monthly subscription voluntarily made as contribution of members.
  • To give loans to members at reasonable interest.
  • To ride on the pooled monies to access additional funds from International Development Partners, Development Banks, Corporate Individuals and Government Bodies.
  • To use the available funds to empower cooperative members through various means.
  • To venture into other wealth creation activities on behalf of the cooperative members.
Eligible Members
  • All NOGALSS members shall be eligible members of the cooperative, including facilitators and learners.
  • The memberships of the cooperative are open to only registered NOGALSS members who believe in the vision of NOGALSS and are desirous to be cooperative members. They shall however be introduced by a registered Member of NOGALSS that is a financial member of NOGALSS cooperative.
  • Registration: All intending members shall upon the payment of registration fee of a sum of seven thousand naira (N7,000.00) only, obtain and fill a registration form and shall return same within two weeks with the initial monthly contribution.

Dividends

Member’s contributions will attract dividends at the end of every year.

Cooperative Annual Merit Award

There shall be NOGALSS Cooperative Annual Merit Award which shall be conferred on members who perform excellently in their various cooperative activities.

Cooperative Unit

For the purpose of reaching the grassroots and have more beneficiaries, the cooperative society shall exist in Units. The Unit of the Cooperative shall have a minimum of ten and maximum of thirty (30) as members. Each Unit shall split into two upon reaching the stipulated maximum number of members. UNITS are to be coordinated by a Unit Chairman, Vice Chairman, Secretary, Assistant Secretary, Treasurer, Financial Secretary, Loan Officer, PRO and Provost. They are, to in conjunction with others members, ensure to among other roles do the following:

  • Mobilize persons of integrity for registrations of more members;
  • Keep records, hold regular meetings and send in statutory reports;
  • Enforce discipline;
  • Assess, recommend loan applications for approval and ensure repayment/recovery of the loan.;
  • Reconciliations of units’ record books

Unit Monthly Cooperative Business Meeting

The Unit Monthly Cooperative Business Meeting provides us the avenue to grow our income trees or create additional income to your financial source. From this meeting, members are equipped with new business opportunities, business trainings, more access to funds, cross fertilization of ideas. It provides avenues for members to advertise themselves. You may think that you have known enough, but there are great packages waiting for you at the business meetings. Idea rules the world.

Unit Activity Support Fund

For your Unit to grow profitably, members are to donate willingly for the running of the activities of the Unit during our business meetings to enable the Units function properly. Such funds can be used for refreshments, recharge cards, etc. Members are to give willingly and cheerfully. This is necessary for sustainability because we do not use people’s savings for refreshments and other expenses of our Cooperative Units.

Education Fund to Support Adult and Non-Formal Education

In view of our social responsibility to the illiterate youth and adults, the minimum sum of one hundred naira (N100.00) only shall be contributed monthly by members. This shall be your benevolence contribution towards stepping up inclusive literacy resulting in the eradication of illiteracy in Nigeria.

Bank Deposit
  • As much as it is possible, all cooperative members shall deposit monies directly into the designated cooperative bank account.
  • The registered name of the contributor must reflect on the bank teller. E.g., if the name on the cooperative form is registered as Yusuf Kanu, then the name on the payer’s space should also be Yusuf Kanu.
  • When you are to pay for someone, use that contributor’s name in the space provided for the payer’s name.
Cooperative Ledgers
  • There shall be an officer designated to be in charge of the cooperative ledgers as shall be agreed upon by the executives.
  • The evidence of payment is to be used to update the ledgers at various levels.
Monthly Report
  • The Cooperative Unit shall submit reports to the Cooperative National Secretariat within five working days after the Unit Cooperative Meeting.
  • There shall be a template for the monthly report as approved by the National Secretariat of the cooperative.
Eligibility for Loan
  • All financial members of the Cooperative shall be eligible to access normal loan after a period of 6months’ subject to review.
  • An eligible member must obtain and fill the loan application form.
  • Member shall be entitled to maximum of 300% of the balance standing on the account as at the time of application.
  • The duration of loan is nine months.
  • The interest rate shall be 5% for the period of nine months.
  • The 5% interest shall be deducted upfront from the approved loan.
  • All financial members are entitled to emergency loan.
  • Administrative charges shall apply.
  • Legal charges may apply.
Security
  • There shall be personal guarantees of two persons; one of which must be a financial member of the cooperative. The guarantors must be able to prove his/her eligibility.
  • Additional collateral may be required where the need arises.
Penalty for Non-Repayment of Loan
  • Loan beneficiaries are expected to complete the repayment of disbursed loan within the stipulated time. Where these do not take place, a 5% monthly interest shall apply after three months of default on the outstanding balance.
  • The cooperative shall recover all its money after all avenues for recovery has been exhausted through legal means as a final resort. All the legal and incidental charges will be borne by the borrower.
General Assembly

The ultimate authority under the law in all the affairs of this society shall be the general body of members who shall from time to time meet to review and direct the work of the society.

Audit/Supervisory Committe

An Audit/Supervisory Team headed by a qualified and competent person are constituted to monitor the activities of the cooperative.
